Alfred R. Berkeley served as President and then Vice-Chairman of the NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc., from June 1996 until August 2003. The NASDAQ Stock Market is the largest electronic stock market in the world and is a key element in America's capital markets. Mr. Berkeley is Chairman of the Board of the Community of Science, Inc., the largest provider of information about grant funding to universities. The company's clients are the largest research universities in the world. The company informs over 400,000 scientists at about 800 universities about funding available from over 10,000 foundations, government agencies and corporations. Before Nasdaq, Mr. Berkeley was a General Partner and then a Managing Director of Alex. Brown & Sons, an investment bank. Mr. Berkeley co-founded the firm's Technology Group in 1975. The group completed about 500 financial offerings for clients while he was associated with the firm. Mr. Berkeley is a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania (MBA) and the University of Virginia (BA). He served as an officer in the United States Air Force. Mr. Berkeley is a trustee of the Johns Hopkins University and the Nature Conservancy. He serves on the National Infrastructure Assurance Council, a post to which President Bush appointed him. He is a trustee of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. He served on the Secretary of Energy's Committee on the Future of Science. He served as a Governor of the National Association of Securities Dealers, the self-regulatory organization responsible for regulating the securities industry. He serves on the boards of several for-profit and non-profit companies. He is married to Muriel VanDusen Berkeley and they are the parents of three daughters. |
