CMC Surfaces Partitioning the Cube

The CMC surfaces pictured here partition the unit cube into 3 equal volumes, and are arranged in order of increasing surface area. The creation of these surfaces was inspired by a problem posed by Horst Simon: What is the least surface area required to thusly partition the unit cube? Although the problem is open, these simulations suggest that the minimizer may be the product of the unit line segment with the minimizer for the one-dimension-lower problem on the square. Note that second surface has only about 0.16 percent more area than the first.

The surfaces were generated using the ^ Brakke Surface Evolver using input generated by LEDG The images were rendered using VPS.
