Mapping the Imagination - An Art Exhibition with Artists from Kala Art Institute

Wednesday, October 15, 2003 to Friday, January 02, 2004
MSRI is pleased to present an exhibition from artists associated with the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.

For nearly thirty years, artists from all over the world have come to the Kala Art Institute for access to the highest quality tools available for printmaking, book arts, and more recently digital media. Located in the former Heinz factory in West Berkeley, Kala's 8,500 square foot facility provides both emerging and established artists with opportunities to create and exhibit new and often cutting-edge artwork. The annual international Fellowship program continuously energizes the studio with cross-cultural artistic dialogue. As a nonprofit organization, Kala is also committed to offering quality art education to both children and adults. Each year nearly one hundred art classes in an array of print techniques are offered to the general public in the Kala studio. East Bay public school children are served by Kala's highly respected Artists-in-the-Schools and summer camp programs. Kala also features a gallery and extensive print archive. The Kala Gallery, a 1400 square foot exhibition space, presents at least eight exhibitions each year with an emphasis on work that has been created in its studio. Exhibitions of Kala artists have also been presented across the country at museums, galleries and public institutions. The San Jose Museum of Art is currently presenting an exhibition of prints by Kala artists. Recent international exhibitions have been presented in Minsk, Quito and Tashkent.
