Seminar on representations of finite groups of Lie type: "The Ore conjecture"

May 14, 2008    02:00 PM to 03:00 PM
Baker Board Room #245
Speaker: Pham Tiep

In 1951, O. Ore conjectured that every element of any finite non-abelian simple group is a commutator. We will report about the proof of this conjecture, completed very recently in joint work of Liebeck, O'Brien, Shalev, and the speaker.
