Joint Postdoctoral Seminar

September 19, 2008    10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Simons Auditorium

10:00 am: Speaker: Julie Rowlett (Analysis of Singular Spaces)
Title: Dynamics of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

11:00 am: Speaker: Julia Wolf (Ergodic Theory and Additive Combinatorics)
Title: Minimal characteristic factors for linear systems

Abstract: This talk will be of a largely expository nature, focussing on the ergodic theoretic methods used by Leibman to determine the degree of the minimal characteristic factor of a multiple ergodic average along a system of linear forms. As we go along I will attempt to outline the connections with the corresponding question in arithmetic combinatorics, which I recently addressed in joint work with Tim Gowers. In this setting one asks for the minimal degree of uniformity needed to accurately count solutions to the corresponding system of linear equations.
