Groups embedding quasi-isometrically into Hilbert spaces

Abstract:
We prove that, for a class of amenable groups containing polycyclic groups, a group embedding quasi-isometrically into Hilbert space must be virtually cyclic. From this we deduce a new proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of $Z^n$, not appealing to Gromov's theorem on polynomial growth. This is joint work with Y. de Cornulier and R. Tessera.
