Gromov's polynomial growth theorem Part I

Friday August 24, 2007

01:30PM - 02:20PM

Speakers:
Indira Chatterji

Abstract:

The objective of this mini-course is to outline the proof of a famous theorem of Gromov:
A finitely generated group has
polynomial growth if and only if it has a nilpotent subgroup of finite index.
We introduce the notions of quasi-isometry, asymptotic cone,
subgroup distortion etc., and present important results on nilpotent, solvable, linear groups.
