Residual finiteness and separability of quasi-convex subgroups

Friday November 9, 2007

11:30AM - 12:20PM

Speakers:
Jason Manning

Abstract:

It is an open question whether every hyperbolic group is residually finite. A related question is whether quasi-convex subgroups of hyperbolic groups are separable (that is, whether elements can be separated from them in finite quotients). Group theoretic Dehn filling turns out to be useful tool for understanding the relationship between these questions. This is joint work with Ian Agol and Daniel Groves.
