This intensive two-day workshop for women will introduce advanced graduate students and recent PhDs to current topics in nonlinear partial differential equations related to geometric analysis. It will consist of introductory mini-courses and talks, as well as a poster session where all participants will be encouraged to present their work.

The aim of the first mini-course, to be given by T. Toro (University of Washington), is to show how techniques that have been very successful in understanding problems in geometric measure theory can be used to study the regularity in free-boundary problems.
The aim of second mini-course, to be given by P. Daskalopoulos (Columbia University), is to show how geometric estimates can be used to study the regularity in free-boundary problems which arise from the degeneracy of nonlinear parabolic flows.
The other four talks will cover areas such as Ricci flow and minimal surfaces.

Invited Speakers Include:
Panagiota Daskalopoulos (Columbia University), Tatiana Toro (University of Washington), Ailana Fraser (University of British Columbia), Christine Guenther (Pacific University), Natasa Sesum (New York University), Guofang Wei (University of California, Santa Barbara).

An important purpose of the workshop is to establish a professional network for participants by introducing them to each other and each others’ work. To this end there will also be a dinner and social activities, as well as a panel discussion on issues related to women in mathematics.

The workshop is part of the year long program, Geometric Evolution Equations and Related Topics, and some additional funding will be available for participants to attend an associated workshop “Introductory Workshop on Geometric Flows and Function Theory in Real and Complex Geometry”, September 11th – 15th.
