Clay Mathematics Institute logoThis workshop is partially supported by the Clay Mathematics Institute.

The goal of the workshop is to focus on some long term developments in Algebra, Geometry and Computation. It will bring together individuals working in these different areas who by-and-large have not had the opportunity to interact with one another, much less collaborate with each other. Despite this lack of opportunity, there a great deal of common mathematics which can be shared by this group. Specifically, the main topics of the workshop will be:

  1. Enumerative and birational geometry of the moduli space of curves.
  2. Homological algebra.
  3. Symbolic computation.
  4. Commutative algebra.
  5. Postulation, equations, and syzygies.
  6. Special varieties.

It is not a coincidence that these topics represent areas in which MSRI's Director, David Eisenbud, has made seminal research contributions. The timing of the workshop also coincides with David's 60th birthday and occurs as he is preparing to step down as Director at the end of this academic year. Thus this workshop will also afford the opportunity to honor David's many and varied lifetime contributions to the vitality of the mathematical sciences.

Invited speakers include:
Vladimir Arnold*, Luchezar Avramov, David Buchsbaum, Mark Green, Juergen Herzog, Melvin Hochster, Sheldon Katz, Gennady Lyubeznik, Shigeru Mukai, Mircea Mustata, Irena Peeva, Sorin Popescu, Michael Singer, Greg Smith, Karen Smith, Mike Stillman, Bernd Ulrich.
(* indicates not yet confirmed)

The schedule is planned to begin on Saturday afternoon, April 28, 2007, with a dinner for registered participants that evening, and a relatively small number of formal talks scheduled for each day, Sunday April 29, 2007, through Friday May 4, 2007. This will allow time for more informal seminars and presentations that can be scheduled at or immediately before the workshop begins. On the evening of Thursday, May 3, 2007, there will be a conference banquet honoring the scholarship and leadership of MSRI's Director, David Eisenbud, on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hotel Durant. Please mention the workshop name and reference the following code when making reservations via phone, fax or e-mail: K90000. The cut-off date for reservations is March 28, 2007.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Rose Garden Inn. Reservations may be made by calling 1-800-992-9005 OR directly on their website. Click on Corporate at the bottom of the screen and when prompted enter code MATH (this code is not case sensitive). By using this code a new calendar will appear and will show MSRI rate on all room types available. The following Group Code should be entered in the "Comment" field when booking through our Website. Group Code = CGMS40. Please note: The Original Queen room type does not have an in-room T1 connection, but we do have WIFI available in our main lobby area. The cut-off date for reservations is March 28, 2007.
