================== SYMPOSIUM ON CLIMATE CHANGE ==================

From Global Models to Local Action
Made possible by the generous support of Sea Change Foundation
Global models based on current and past observations document
the reality of climate change caused by human activity, although
the details of when and what will happen where are far from clear.
This symposium will address the problems and research necessary
to translate these global, long-term predictions into
local predictions on shorter scales of time, where governments
and businesses can act; and will address the implications for
industry and public policy now.
April 11, 2007: Public Symposium, Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco
7:00pm-9:30pm
Confirmed Speakers:
Severin Borenstein, Professor, Haas School of Business and
Director of the University of California Energy Institute
Jerry McNerney, Congressman
Orville Schell, Dean, UC Berkeley School of Journalism
Michael Peevey, President, California Public Utilities Commission
For more information, please go to:

Satisfactory" at 8 pm at the Roda Theatre at the Berkeley Rep. Dr. Brenner's
weeklong visit is sponsored by the Simons Biology Colloquium, which brings

================== WORKSHOPS AT BANFF IN 2007 ===================

MSRI is a partner in operating the Banff International Research Station
(BIRS). More information can be accessed at http://www.pims.math.ca/birs/
During the 48-week scientific program BIRS runs either a full workshop (40
people for 5 days) or two half-workshops (20 people for 5 days). BIRS
provides meals, accommodation, and research facilities at no cost to the
organizers and to the invited participants.

===================== ARCHIMEDES SOCIETY ========================

The Archimedes Society helps MSRI to implement important programs and,
diversify and plan its future funding. Archimedes Society donor levels
celebrate interesting numbers. For example, the Plato Donor level of $1,922
to $5,040 references The Laws, in which Plato asserts that a suitable number
of citizens for the ideal city would be that number that contained the most
numerous and most consecutive subdivisions. He decided on 5,040, a number
with 59 divisors (apart from itself). All Archimedes Society donors are
invited at no or reduced cost to special events, and are offered reserved
seating and special post-event receptions. Donors at the Museion level
($5,041+) are invited to two dinner/lectures in Berkeley and one in New
York. To join the Archimedes Society, please go to:
http://www.msri.org/alumdev/archimedes/index_html

MSRI would also welcome mention in your Will or Living Trust. Visit
http://www.msri.org/alumdev/ways/plannedgifts for more information. Please
notify MSRI’s Development Director, Jim Sotiros, at JSotiros@msri.org or
510-643-6056 when you have done so, and you will be recognized in the MSRI
Gauss Society. The first meeting of the Gauss Society took place on Jan. 6,
2007 at a dinner recognizing members at Galatoire’s restaurant in New
Orleans during the Joint Meetings. Please join the Gauss Society, and plan
on joining us next year in San Diego.

===================== K-12 MATH EDUCATION =======================

Critical Issues in Education: Teaching Teachers Mathematics
May 30, 2007 to June 1, 2007
Organized By: Deborah Ball (University of Michigan), Jim Lewis
(University of Nebraska) Chair, Ruth Heaton (University of Nebraska)

The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, for students in grades 6-12, will
consist of morning mathematical activities, a lunch at Google in Mountain
View, CA, a math-circle style talk, and, of course, prizes. Julia Robinson
is the Berkeley mathematician who, among other important discoveries, made
significant contributions to the solution of Hilbert’s Tenth Problem.

The morning activities will cover a wide variety of mathematical topics,
including abstract problem-solving techniques like symmetry and parity as
well as content ranging from arithmetic and algebra through combinatorics
and topology. Students will have time to visit at least five or six
activities during the morning session. Each activity table will be staffed
by an expert, and upon reaching certain milestones in their understanding
of the mathematics behind the puzzle or game or activity, students will be
rewarded with raffle tickets for the afternoon’s prize drawings.

Following lunch, Paul Zeitz of the University of San Francisco will give a
math talk, and then the day will close with the distribution of prizes.
The events will end around 3pm.

The festival is also the kick-off of a dynamic new problem-solving
activity that will take place during the next school year: stay tuned for
its announcement!

Registration opens at 9am at building 40 at Google, 1600 Amphitheatre
Parkway in Mountain View. Pre-registration for all attendees, including
students, teachers, and parent chaperones, is required. To pre-register,
use the online form at www.msri.org by April 15. If you have any
questions, contact joshua.zucker@stanfordalumni.org. Thanks to our sponsors,
the desJardins/Blachman fund and Google.
