===================== SPECIAL PUBLIC EVENT ======================
The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute is pleased to welcome you to
attend a free, public lecture on MONDAY, OCTOBER 22 at 8:00 PM by Dr. Alan
Perelson, Senior Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory, who will speak on
"How Mathematics Provides Information about HIV/AIDS" in the Institute's
Simons Auditorium. Dr. Perelson's weeklong visit is sponsored by the MSRI
Biology Colloquium, which brings distinguished specialists to the Institute
to interact with mathematicians and to engage the public with developments
from the forefront of biological research. MSRI is located at 17 Gauss Way,
Berkeley. An Archimedes Society reception will follow the event and
Archimedes Society members are invited to attend by sending their RSVP to
Jim Sotiros at JSotiros AT msri.org or 510.643.6056.

on "Modeling Immune Responses: Coping with Diversity Using Shape-Space
Formulations" will be followed by a reception for Prof. Perelson from 3-4pm.
Alan Perelson is visiting the Institute to give talks on biology aimed
especially toward mathematicians. Perelson's Thursday (10/25) talk at 4:00pm

================= 25th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ==================
MSRI commemorates its 25th Anniversary with a scientific conference running
from Sunday, Jan. 27 to Wednesday, Jan. 30 that highlights mathematical
research at the Institute since its inception in 1982. The organizers of the
conference are Isadore Singer, Alejandro Adem, and Robert Bryant. Please
check this URL for details to come: http://www.msri.org/specials/25
A free special event will be held in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary,
"Christopher Taylor in conversation with David Benson, and Robert Osserman"
on Saturday, January 26 at 4:00 pm in the Institute's Simons Auditorium. The
discussion will be highlighted by musical demonstrations as Taylor, a
pianist, who graduated Harvard Summa Cum Laude in mathematics and the
following year won a medal at the van Cliburn competition, and Benson, the
author of "Music: A Mathematical Offering," and mathematician Bob Osserman,
the longtime MSRI Special Projects Director, discuss mathematical themes
which play a role in music. See

===================== ARCHIMEDES SOCIETY ========================
The Archimedes Society helps MSRI to implement important programs and,
diversify and plan its future funding. Archimedes Society donor levels
celebrate interesting numbers. For example, the Museion donor level is named
for the Museion, "the Hall of the Muses", Ptolemy I's institute at ancient
Alexandria. Scholars came to study and advance science, and the adjacent
library was said to be the greatest in the world at the time. Museion donors
are invited to dinner / lectures, two of which are held in Berkeley each
year, and a third in New York City. All Archimedes Society donors are
invited at no or reduced cost to special events, and are offered reserved
seating and special post-event receptions. To join the Archimedes Society,
please go to http://www.msri.org/alumdev/archimedes/index_html
MSRI would also welcome mention in your Will or Living Trust. Visit
http://www.msri.org/alumdev/ways/plannedgifts for more information. Please
notify MSRI's Development Director, Jim Sotiros, at JSotiros AT msri.org or
510-643-6056 when you have done so, and you will be recognized in the MSRI
Gauss Society. The first meeting of the Gauss Society took place on Jan. 6,
2007 at a dinner recognizing members at Galatoire's restaurant in New
Orleans during the Joint Meetings. Please join the Gauss Society, and plan
on joining us next year in San Diego.
================== NEW EAST BAY MATH CIRCLE =====================
The Oakland/East Bay Math circle met for the first time on Monday, September
10, 2007 at Laney College. It offers secondary students who love math in the
greater Oakland area an opportunity to further discover mathematics in a
free, after school enrichment program. See http://oebmc.mathcircles.org for
more info.
================ CORPORATE AFFILIATES PROGRAM ===================
Corporations contribute generously to MSRI and receive benefits from a close
relationship with the Institute through various forms of sponsorship. MSRI
Corporate Affiliates provide general support, fund workshops, support senior
research professorships, post-doctoral associates or interns, and provide
underwriting for community education or outreach programs.
Corporate Affiliates members enjoy a variety of benefits including
invitations to special events and listing in MSRI publications. For more
information about the Corporate Affiliates program go to:

========== CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS IN 2009 @BANFF ===========
MSRI is a partner in operating the Banff International Research Station
(BIRS), which is now accepting proposals for its 2009 program. Application
information is available at http://www.birs.ca. BIRS is hosting a 48-week
scientific program in 2009. Each week, the station will be running either a
full workshop (42 people for 5 days) or two half-workshops (20 people for 5
days). As usual, BIRS provides full accommodation, board, and research
facilities at no cost to the invited participants, in a setting conducive to
research and collaboration. The application deadline for 5-day Workshop and
Summer School proposals is OCTOBER 1, 2007.
