Abstract:

The notion of conductance, a measure of bottlenecks in a Markov chain,
is one of the fundamental tools in studying mixing times. In this talk
we remedy several shortcomings of conductance bounds by showing sharp
mixing times theorems in terms of modified conductance, an extension
to general (non-lazy non-reversible) Markov chains, and propose an
alternate measure of bottlenecks which often eliminates an unnecessary
squaring in conductance bounds. Sharp Cheeger inequalities and
canonical path results also follow and will be discussed briefly. Our
results are based on an extension and sharpening of Evolving Set ideas
of Morris and Peres.
