Abstract:

Recent progress in computing mixing times has focussed on discrete
state spaces, but some physical models (such as the hard-core gas
model) were defined originally for points in Euclidean space. We
attack the local-move hard-core model in one dimension, where the
continuous state space already poses some interesting problems. A
couple of novel techniques (joint work with Dana Randall) are used to
get improved bounds.
