Abstract:

We illustrate some analytic tools for the determination of sharp
spectral gap estimates, including an extension of the
Carlen-Carvalho-Loss approach and some improved comparison
techniques. We discuss applications to a variety of Markov chains
based on local shuffling rules (such as random local averages,
transpositions or inversions). The approach depends mildly on the
nature of the shuffling rules and is well suited to treat discrete as
well as continuous models.
