Summary:

The first part of the lecture describes blow-ups of real projective
space along particular subspaces. Using a natural piecewise-Euclidean
metric and Gromov's lemma, it is shown that many of these blow-ups are
aspherical. Then certain tangent bundle complements that generalize the
complements of complexified real affine arrangements are investigated.
It turns out that under suitable hypotheses these complements are
homotopy equivalent to a generalized Salvetti complex.
