I will discuss some new methods, developed jointly with Andras Vasy, to study the Laplacian on noncompact symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their perturbations, and shall describe some applications of this work, with Olivier Biquard, concerning the construction of Einstein metrics
of this asymptotic type.
