Abstract: |
As part of an NSF-funded Center for Learning and Teaching (CEMELA), we were given a unique opportunity
to co-teach a mathematics course in the area of algebra for a cohort of middle school teachers whose students
were primarily English Language Learners. There was no syllabus for the course, we had recently finished
graduate school (one of us in mathematics education and one of us in mathematics), we did not know the
teachers, and we had recently met each other. The resulting semester was often very successful, occasionally
somewhat frustrating, and always an incredible learning experience. We will discuss this course and some of
the things we learned along the way, and the evolution of our relationship as instructors. |
