MSRI Policy on Connecting Personal Computers to the MSRI Network

In keeping with our goal of becoming a model site for the integration of computing and mathematics, MSRI allows members who have brought their own personal computer to connect to our network, subject to the following rules.

All computers attached to the MSRI network must be registered with the computing staff and assigned a name and an IP address compatible with the msri.org domain.

MSRI supports Ethernet connections only; there is no support for AppleTalk or other protocols. MSRI will supply an UTP cable with RJ45 terminators for connecting to the office wall taps. Any other necessary transceivers, cards or other hardware are the responsibility of the owner.

MSRI will support network connectivity only. MSRI assumes no responsibility to support the hardware or software resident on a member's computer. We will attempt, to the extent that our resources allow, to assist members in properly configuring the software on their computers to allow network connectivity.

The MSRI computing staff must be allowed full root access to all devices connected to our network, for administrative purposes. You are asked to write the administrative password(s) of your computer on a piece of paper to be placed in a sealed envelope to be held by the computing staff. You will be notified if we have had to access your compter.

While connected to the MSRI network, you may not use your computer in a way which compromises the performance, security, or integrity of the MSRI network. In particular, you may not allow your computer to be directly accessed from outside of the MSRI network, either my use of a modem or by other means. You may not allow your computer to be used in a fashion which violates local, state, or federal laws governing telecommunication.

If you violate these rules, the network connection will be closed immediately, and your account on the MSRI network may be closed.
