We describe recent work proving that the 4x4 minors of a 5xn matrix are a tropical basis, answering a question of Develin, Santos and Sturmfels. Equivalently, we prove that every 5xn matrix of tropical rank at most 3 has Kapranov rank at most 3. To appear in joint work with Anders Jensen and Elena Rubei.
