Restriction theory naturally gravitates towards settings where the decisive estimates appear to be on $L^2$. Obvious examples of this are the bilinear, multilinear and polynomial approaches of recent years. The main purpose of this talk is to explore $L^2$ estimates in multilinear contexts, with particular emphasis on an elementary $L^2$ identity for the $n$-linear extension operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$. This is joint work with Marina Iliopoulou.
