Dr. Maria Mercedes Franco, Site Director

Maria Mercedes Franco is Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at Queensborough Community College CUNY, where is she is also the Department Chair. Dr. Franco received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University. She also holds an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell and a B.S. in Mathematics from Universidad del Valle (Colombia). Her research focuses on problems of nonlinear elasticity, calculus of variations, and numerical analysis.

Dr. David Uminsky, Research Director

David Uminsky is the director for the MS in Data Science program at the University of San Francisco (USF). His research interests are in unsupervised machine learning, data clustering, algebraic signal processing, as well as pattern formation, dynamical systems and fluids. David was selected in 2015 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as a Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow. He is also the founding director of the Bachelor's program in Data Science at University of San Francisco. Before joining USF, he was a combined National Science Foundation and UC President's Fellow at UCLA, where he was awarded the Chancellor's Award for postdoctoral research. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Boston University and a BS in Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College.

Dr. Mario Banuelos, Postdoctoral Fellow

Mario Banuelos
is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at California State University, Fresno. His research interests include mathematical biology, optimization, statistical models for genome evolution, and data science. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Math from the University of California, Merced under the guidance of Dr. Suzanne Sindi.

Paul Samuel Ignacio, Graduate Assistant

Paul Samuel Ignacio
is an assistant professor of Mathematics at the University of the Philippines Baguio, and a graduate student in the Mathematics Ph.D. program at the University of Iowa, where he is a Fulbright Scholar. He received his BS and MS in Mathematics degrees at the University of the Philippines Baguio in 2010 and 2013 respectively, and a second MS in Mathematics degree from the University of Iowa in 2016. His research interests are in Topological Data Analysis where he applies tools from Algebraic Topology to extract features from spaces built up from point cloud data. Paul enjoys photography a lot! When not doing math, he likes to take photos of his friends, birds, flowers, and dogs. He also volunteered to tell the MSRI-UP 2018 story through his lens.

Joanna Itzel Navarro, Graduate Assistant

Joanna Itzel Navarro
is a graduate student in mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles.
