SIMONS PUBLIC LECTURE BY EMILY SHUCKBURGH On Monday evening, March 4, Climate scientist Emily Shuckburgh, from the British Antarctic Survey, delivers the second in an international series of MPE2013 Simons Public Lectures at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco at 7:30 pm. As the leader of the Open Oceans research group, her research focuses on understanding the role of the polar oceans in the global climate system. She will explain how the tools of science are being applied to the challenge of understanding the climate, what uncertainties we face, and what to do about those uncertainties. This Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 event is sponsored by the Simons Foundation. DIVERSITY The eight NSF-funded US mathematics institutes created a collaborative diversity initiative that began in the fall of 2011. This program sponsors several mathematics and diversity oriented workshops per year. The next activity in this series is the Career Options for Women in Mathematical Sciences Workshop, which will take place March 3–5, 2013 at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in Minneapolis, MN. THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MATH CIRCLES NAMC will be at the 2013 Joint Math Meetings in San Diego.
