MATH INSTITUTES OPEN HOUSE - MPE 2013 US LAUNCH Visit MSRI’s table at the annual Math Institutes Open House reception at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Diego on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Ballroom B on the lobby floor of the San Diego Marriott. The event will mark the launch of the yearlong Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) 2013 in the United States. CALL FOR PROPOSALS MSRI invites submissions of proposals for Thematic Programs, Hot Topics Workshops, and Summer Graduate Schools. MEMBER APPLICATIONS FOR 2013–14 The application period for the 2013–2014 scientific programs began on August 1, 2012. The 2013–2014 programs will be: Mathematical General Relativity (Fall 2013); Optimal Transport: Geometry and Dynamics (Fall 2013); Model Theory, Arithmetic Geometry and Number Theory (Spring 2014); and Algebraic Topology (Spring 2014). The deadline to apply for Postdoctoral Fellowships and Research Memberships is December 1, 2012. DIVERSITY The eight NSF-funded US mathematics institutes created a collaborative diversity initiative that began in the fall of 2011. This program sponsors several mathematics and diversity oriented workshops per year. The next activity in this series is the Blackwell-Tapia Conference, which will take place November 9 – 10, 2012 at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) in Providence, RI. DONOR RECOGNITION PROGRAMS The ARCHIMEDES SOCIETY helps MSRI to implement important programs and diversify and plan its future funding. Archimedes Society donor levels celebrate interesting numbers and places. Archimedes Society donors are invited at no or reduced cost to special events, and are offered reserved seating and special post-event receptions. BAY AREA MATH OUTREACH EVENTS MoMath’s (Museum of Mathematics) traveling exhibit is currently on display at the Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley, CA! Tuesday, November 13 from 6 - 8 pm: "The Mathematics Behind Math Midway!" High school students, parents, and teachers--come learn about the mathematics behind the fun in the Math Midway activities from Dr. Paul Zeitz of the University of San Francisco! After the presentation, you can enjoy yourself at the reception, explore Math Midway activities such as the A-Maze-ing Maze, Organ Function Grinder, or the Ring of Fire, and visit other museum exhibits.
