The Preparation of Math Majors in the First Two Years: A Curriculum Policy Workshop

The MAA Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM) is conducting a major analysis of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum with the goal of formulating national policy recommendations on college mathematics instruction. As part of this effort, the subcommittee on Calculus Reform and the First Two Years (CRAFTY) is soliciting recommendations from the various disciplines served by the first two years of college mathematics through a series of workshops, culminating in a curriculum conference to analyze and synthesize the workshop findings.Disciplinary workshops have been or will be held in Physics, Computer Science, Health-related Life Sciences, Mathematics Education, Biology,Chemistry, Business, Finance, Economics, Technology, and Statistics.

An important discipline served by the first two years of college mathematics is mathematics itself. MSRI will host this workshop to formulate curriculum policy recommendations for the first two years aimed at students majoring in mathematics. Working Groups from among the participants will make recommendations on goals, content, technology, and instructional methods.The reports produced by this group will receive widespread attention and dissemination within the mathematical community nationwide; people interested in influencing mathematics education policy should attend. A mixture of the following sorts of people is desirable: faculty withextensive experience teaching and designing curricular for lower division courses; faculty with experience designing various options for the mathematics major; and researchers and practitioners able to think broadly about the direction of undergraduate education in their field. In addition to influencing curriculum nationally, participants will have a chance to learn about current practices in mathematics education that might be useful at their home institutions.

If you are interested in joining a Working Group, please send a brief email to William McCallum (wmc@math.arizona.edu) outlining your interests, possible contributions you could make, and your experience with issues pertaining to the education of math majors. Some slots in the Working Groups will be filled by invitation. We hope to be able to accommodate all those interested, but may be forced to limit the size of the Working Groups in the interests of efficiency.

Students, recent Ph.D.'s, women, and members of underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Funding awards are made typically 6 weeks before the workshop begins. Requests received after the funding deadline are considered only if additional funds become available.
