Visual analysis is defined to be the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visualizations. The goal of visual analysis is to enable the understanding of massive datasets. Such datasets arise in science, engineering and commerce, as well as intelligence analysis and emergency response. Analyzing large amounts of information is a major intellectual challenge as well as a key technology for homeland security. The emerging field of visual analysis is the synthesis of many ideas from otherwise disparate fields including human-computer interaction, scientific and information visualization, statistical graphics and mathematical visualization, and geographic information systems and cartography.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together computer scientists and mathematicians to discuss mathematical and computational problems involved in visual analysis. A secondary goal is to engage the mathematical community and introduce them to this application area.
