Description
The workshop will begin on Saturday with a Math Festival for school children in the Phoenix area. Throughout the day there will be a number of parallel math circle sessions on such topics as rational tangles, math and magic, There will also be a number of activity tables, each staffed by a mathematical expert. When students reach certain understanding milestones at the various activity tables, they will be rewarded with raffle tickets for drawings that will take place at the end of the day. We expect 400 students and 150 adults to attend the festival. Many undergraduates and graduate students from ASU will contribute time to make the festival and later Math Circle a success. Just as important as the ability of students to move from one activity or session to a different one is the ability of circle leaders (and potential leaders) to move from one to another. This allows everyone to learn from several different centers, and to compare different approaches. There will be comment forms near each of the activities and the workshop participants will be invited to comment on the various activities. This will provide even experienced circle leaders with constructive feed back from other experienced circle leaders on the activities. The Festival will also serve as an introduction to instructional techniques for circle leaders and a laboratory for circle evaluators. About one month before the workshop, we will group people new to Math Circles together with experienced Math Circle leaders to plan and run the activities and sessions at the festival. Most of the preparation and communication will take place well before the festival, but we also expect that these groups will meet on Friday afternoon or evening before the festival. Doing this will give the people wishing to start Math Circles a hands-on introduction to appropriate activities and the benefit of the advice of an experienced circle leader while developing a presentation. More information will be posted closer to the date of the workshop.
