Personal Profile of Dr. Suzanne L. Weekes

Biography
Suzanne L. Weekes is a faculty member in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) where she has also served as the Associate Head and as the Director of the Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics. She was born in Trinidad and Tobago and left to attend Indiana University where she received her BS degree in Mathematics. She then earned a PhD in Mathematics and Scientific Computing at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and did her post-doctoral work at Texas A&M University. Her research work is in numerical methods for differential equations including applications to cancer growth and dynamic materials.

Dr. Weekes is one of the founding directors of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program (MSRI-UP), a comprehensive, focused summer research program that is hosted by MSRI and which targets underrepresented groups in mathematics. She also directs the WPI Research Experience for Undergraduates Program in Industrial Mathematics and Statistics which is the first NSF-funded REU program that exclusively involves students in real-world projects sponsored by corporate partners. Prof. Weekes is a co-PI on the PIC Math (Preparation for Industrial Careers in Mathematical Sciences) Program which is supported by the NSF along with the MAA and SIAM and whose aim is to prepare mathematical sciences students for industrial careers by engaging them in research problems that come directly from industry.

Prof. Weekes also serves on the SIAM Committee on Education.
