| Dr. Laufer was Vice President of Research at Renaissance Technologies LLC, an investment management company using mathematical and statistical methods. He retired from the company in 2009. Before joining Renaissance in 1992, Dr. Laufer was a Professor of Mathematics at Stony Brook University for more than two decades.
Dr. Laufer earned his undergraduate degree at the City College of New York in 1964. After earning his MA and PhD in Mathematics from Princeton University, he taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1966–1968) and Princeton (1968–1971). He joined the Mathematics Department of Stony Brook in 1971. His research over the next two decades, during which time he won a prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, focused on complex variables and algebraic geometry. His dissertation had been entitled, “Sheaf Cohomology and Envelopes of Holomorphy” and his advisor was Robert C. Gunning.
Dr. Laufer is a trustee of the Stony Brook Foundation, the separate charitable entity that accepts and manages private gifts and grants for the university, and serves on the board of the Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology at Stony Brook.
He and his wife, Marsha Zlatin Laufer, have three children and nine grandchildren.
