Srinivasa Varadhan, also known as Raghu, received his doctorate from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata in 1963. After graduation he has spent his entire academic career at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University, having served as its director during 1980-84 and 1992-94. He is currently Professor of Mathematics and Frank J. Gould Professor of Science. His interests are mainly in probability theory, with connections to statistical mechanics and partial differential equations.

He has received several awards, including Sloan and Guggenheim Fellowships, Birkhoff Prize (SIAM and AMS) , Steele Prize (AMS), and the Abel Prize (Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters). He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The Royal Society (UK), and several other international academies.
