In this talk we will discuss a class of powers that was recently defined using differential operators. In the first part, we
will review the basics for rings of differential operators. Then, wewill discuss the definition of differential powers and its connections with symbolic powers. The second part of the talk will focus on the use of these powers to study singularities. The original results are part of three projects with: Dao, De Stefani, Grifo, Huneke (2018); Brenner, Jeffries (2019); and Duarte (2020).
