Visual analysis is defined to be the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visualizations. The goal of visual analysis is to enable the understanding of massive datasets. Such datasets arise in science, engineering and commerce, as well as intelligence analysis and emergency response. Analyzing large amounts of information is a major intellectual challenge as well as a key technology for homeland security. The emerging field of visual analysis is the synthesis of many ideas from otherwise disparate fields including human-computer interaction, scientific and information visualization, statistical graphics and mathematical visualization, and geographic information systems and cartography. The goal of this workshop is to bring together computer scientists and mathematicians to discuss mathematical and computational problems involved in visual analysis. A secondary goal is to engage the mathematical community and introduce them to this application area. Schedule Monday, October 16   8:30 -  9:00 Registration   9:00 -  9:15 Opening remarks: Pat Hanrahan and Larry Rosenblum   9:15 -10:00 Jim Thomas: The Challenges of Visual Analytics 10:30 -12:30 Supporting Interaction:                       William Cleveland                       Robert Gentleman                       Muthu Muthukrishnan                       Suresh Venkatasubramanian                       Emmanuel Candes 12:30 - 2:00 Lunch   2:00 - 4:00 Finding Patterns:                       Peter Jones                       Vin de Silva                       Francois Meyer                       Naoki Saito                       Michael Mahoney   4:00 - 5:00 Demonstrations Tuesday, October 17   9:00 -  9:30 Nancy Chinchor: The Needs of Analysts   9:30 -10:00 Leland Wilkinson: Visions of Visual Analysis 10:30 -12:30 Integrating Hetereogenous Data Sources:                       Sanda Harabagiu                       John Byrne                       Jean-Michel Pomerade                       Christian Posse                       Guy Lebanon 12:30 -  2:00 Lunch   2:00 -  4:00 Smart Visual Analysis:                       Leland Wilkinson                       Jock Mackinlay                       Jim Arvo                       Amy Braverman                       Dan Carr   4:00 -  4:30 Break   4:30 -  5:30 Panel: Findings and Recommendations                       Pat Hanrahan                       Nancy Chinchor                       Sanda Harabigiu                       Peter Jones                       William Cleveland                       Leland Wilkinson Potential topics to be discussed include: Logical reasoning Knowledge representations and ontologies Probabilistic reasoning Natural language processing Imaging Computational statistics Machine learning Analysis of high-dimensional spaces Information theory Graphs and networks Time series analysis and change detection A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hotel Durant. Please mention the workshop name and reference the following code when making reservations via phone, fax or e-mail: KF0000. The cut-off date for reservations is September 15, 2006. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Rose Garden Inn. Reservations may be made by calling 1-800-992-9005 OR directly on their website. Click on Corporate at the bottom of the screen and when prompted enter code MATH (this code is not case sensitive). By using this code a new calendar will appear and will show MSRI rate on all room types available. The following Group Code should be entered in the "Comment" field when booking through our Website. Group Code = CGMS33. Please note: The Original Queen room type does not have an in-room T1 connection, but we do have WIFI available in our main lobby area. The cut-off date for reservations is September 26, 2006.
