A multiplicative ergodic theorem for mapping class groups

Geometry of mapping class groups and Out(Fn) October 25, 2016 - October 28, 2016

October 27, 2016 (02:00 PM PDT - 03:00 PM PDT)
Speaker(s): Camille Horbez (Université de Paris XI)
Location: MSRI: Simons Auditorium

Oseledets's multiplicative ergodic theorem describes the growth of vectors in R^N under linear ergodic cocycles. I will report on joint work with Anders Karlsson in which we establish an analogous result for mapping class groups of surfaces, describing the various growth rates for the lengths of curves on a hyperbolic surface S under ergodic cocycles of mapping classes of S
