Membership at SLMath

SLMath invites membership applications for the 2024-2025 academic year in the following positions:

The application period for Research Professors and Research Members opens August 15, 2023. The application period for Postdoctoral Fellows will open on October 1, 2023.


The research programs for the academic year 2024-2025 appear below.

Research Professorships are reserved for distinguished researchers who can make key contributions to their programs including the mentoring of postdoctoral fellows. Research Professors must be in residence at SLMath for a minimum of three months.

Research Members are mathematicians with Ph.D.s who will be in residence for at least 30 consecutive days (preferably longer) in a scientific program.

Postdoctoral Fellows must hold a Ph.D. awarded no more than five years prior to the start of the program. Fellows must be in residence for the entire duration of the program (with no exceptions), and cannot receive any other monetary compensation while at SLMath.

Additional Support

SLMath strives to include a diverse community of mathematicians in its programs. Recognizing that family issues can present barriers to participation, SLMath is committed to maintaining family-friendly policies and, when possible, facilitating appropriate arrangements for partners and children of program members. Some ways that this addressed include:

  • The Institute also employs a Family Services Coordinator who provides help in locating schools and other services for mathematicians considering coming to the Institute with their families. For information about childcare in the Berkeley area, see this page.
  • For women with children, SLMath provides financial support that makes it possible for them to fully take part in the program. This may take the form of reimbursement of childcare expenses incurred in Berkeley, or reimbursement of expenses incurred if the children stay home, thus allowing the member to attend the program.
  • The Complementary Program has a limited number of memberships that are open to both mathematicians whose interests align with those of the Director or Deputy Director, and mathematicians who are partners of invited members of a core program. Interested partners should apply for the position of Research Members in the Complementary Program through MathJobs, as described below.

Applying via MathJobs

SLMath uses MathJobs to process applications for its positions. Interested candidates must apply online at www.mathjobs.org/jobs/MSRI beginning August 15, 2023 for Research Professors and Research Members, and October 1, 2023 for Postdoctoral Fellows.

At the MathJobs website, you will first create a login and fill out a Standard AMS Cover Sheet. Then you will be able to access the SLMath application form(s), pertinent to your areas of research. All applications will be reviewed by the SLMath Directorate, Scientific Advisory Committee, Human Resources Advisory Committee, and Program Organizers.

The process is explained at the MathJobs website; here we provide a brief summary. Each application has a supplementary list of questions, some relating to the particular position for which you are applying, and others being demographic questions, to which you must to respond. SLMath uses this information for reporting purposes only; it is made available to us as aggregate statistical data, and not as part of your individual application. On these pages you will be able to submit a CV and the names of people identified to submit letters of support. It is the applicant’s responsibility to inform those people how to submit their letters, and to insure that they are submitted before the application deadline. You will also be asked to submit a Statement of Purpose, describing your research goals and the particular relevance of the SLMath program to those goals.

Important Note on Visa Status

If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, your visa status may severely limit or even eliminate the possibility of SLMath providing compensation or reimbursement for your expenses, as well as restricting the length of time that you can visit SLMath. You should therefore carefully indicate your visa status on your MathJobs application and investigate its terms.
