Research Members

Application Deadline: November 15, 2023
SLMath awards Research Memberships at the January meeting of its Scientific Advisory Committee. These positions are reserved for researchers who will be in residence for at least 30 consecutive days and preference will be given to those who can attend for longer periods. It is expected that Research Members will visit SLMath with partial support from other sources. Applicants for Research Membership who require some living or travel support should indicate that in the MathJobs application.

The Complementary Program has a limited number of memberships that are open to mathematicians whose interests are not closely related to the core programs; special consideration will be given to mathematicians who are partners of an invited member of a core program. Interested partners should apply for a Research Membership in the Complementary Program on MathJobs www.MathJobs.Org (as described below). An applicant to a core program with a partner applying in the complementary program should indicate this fact in their application.

Eligibility: Researchers with a PhD at the time of the proposed residency; financial support is not available for graduate students. Some preference is given to U.S. applicants.

Support: Research memberships may be offered with no support, and/or with per diem support. The per diem level is currently $4,500 per month. Members are eligible for per diem support only during their dates of residency while the program is in session.

Application Process: The application is to be completed online at the MathJobs website. Please read the instructions there before completing the form. Be sure to specify the program to which you are applying on MathJobs, and be careful to indicate the extent of support needed in the application form. Applications are reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Committee, the Human Resources Advisory Committee, and the Program Organizers.

*Submit the following items online at the MathJobs site, between August 15, 2023 and November 15, 2023:*

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Publication List
  • Statement of Purpose
  • 2 Reference Letters (to be uploaded on MathJobs by the reference writers)

To receive full consideration, it is essential that all application materials, including two letters of support, be in place at the MathJobs website by November 15, 2023.

Important Note on Visa Status: If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident, please make sure to check visa instructions before proceeding with your application. Please note that severe restrictions apply to H1-B visa holders. For any immigration questions, please contact SLMath's International Advisor at int-advisor@msri.org

Important Note: The Complementary Program has a limited number of memberships that are open to mathematicians who are partners of invited members of a core program. Interested partners should apply for the position of Research Members in the Complementary Program through MathJobs www.mathjobs.org/jobs/MSRI.

Research Membership offers will be announced during February 2024. SLMath asks applicants' consideration in not phoning or emailing the Institute regarding the status of their applications before March 2023.

Mid career female applicants may wish to consider applying for the Joan and Joseph Birman Fellowship for Women Scholars.
