Maryam Mirzakhani Endowed Professorship

Support the Maryam Mirzakhani Endowed Professorship at MSRI

Maryam Mirzakhani won mathematics’ highest honor, the Fields Medal, in 2014. To our great sadness she passed away in 2017 at age 40. The mathematical and scientific community as well as the general public worldwide honored her remarkable achievements. Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, said that the "unprecedented brilliance of this creative scientist and modest human being, who made Iran's name resonate in the world's scientific forums, was a turning point in showing the great will of Iranian women and young people on the path towards reaching the peaks of glory and in various international arenas".

To honor Dr. Mirzakhani's legacy, MSRI has proposed a five million dollar endowment to support four Mirzakhani Professors each year in programs at the Institute.

Support the Mirzakhani Endowment at MSRI

In the words of Maryam’s husband, Dr. Jan Vondrák:

Maryam was a big fan of MSRI. She always enjoyed its inspiring environment and would not miss a chance to participate when a related program was running there. We had fond memories of spending most of the spring semester of 2005 at MSRI. It was shortly after we met as graduate students in Boston, and moving to Berkeley for a while was like a breath of fresh air. Maryam participated at MSRI in several ways and she was always glad to do it. ...The proximity of MSRI was one of the factors in our decision to move to California in 2009. Maryam was a bit concerned about leaving the East Coast, which had admittedly more activity in her area of mathematics, but the presence of frequent visitors in the Bay area, many of them thanks to exciting programs at MSRI, was a significant factor. We always loved to visit MSRI and Maryam would be happy for MSRI to be supported in any way possible.

A Legacy for the Future

Dr. Mirzakhani’s scientific work will endure and remain important, and through Chairs such as these we can preserve the memory of her humble spirit of exploration and her indomitable quest for knowledge. MSRI welcomes collaboration with all who will help remember and continue the impact of this remarkable mathematician, and your support helps us to honor her legacy through continuing research.
