The Chancellor's Professorship

The Chancellor's Professorship

The Chancellor's Professorship is awarded to one distinguished researcher coming to MSRI for a program each year. The holder of this chair is paid a salary by the University, and teaches one graduate-level course on an advanced research topic during the semester of the program. In this way the range of graduate courses is increased, and Berkeley students and faculty have the opportunity to hear from a world-class expert who would not ordinarily be present in the department.

Each of the programs Organizing Committees nominates a candidate or candidates the year before the program is in residence at MSRI. The candidates are chosen both for their excellence in research and their excellence in teaching. The candidates are reviewed for quality by the Scientific Advisory Committee at its November meeting, and a final choice among the candidates is made by the Berkeley mathematics department.
