Research Professors

Application Deadline: October 1, 2023
SLMath awards a small number of Research Professorships at the November meeting of its Scientific Advisory Committee. These positions are reserved for distinguished researchers who can make key contributions to their programs including the mentoring of postdoctoral fellows. Research Professorships are normally awarded only to candidates who plan to be in residence for at least three months.

Eligibility: Tenured faculty or Emeriti who have received a PhD prior to 2014.
Support: A Research Professor may receive up to $5,700 per month for reimbursement of local expenses during her/his residence at SLMath. Research Professors are automatically eligible for nomination for appointment as Chern Professors, Della Pietra Professors, Eisenbud Professors, or Simons Professors. Nominations for these special professorships are made by the organizing committees of the programs; no separate application is necessary. (See a list of all distinguished professorships at SLMath.)

Application process: The application is to be completed online at the MathJobs website. Please read the instructions there before completing the form. Be sure to specify the program to which you are applying on MathJobs, and be careful to indicate the extent of support needed in the application form. Applications are reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Committee, the Human Resources Advisory Committee, and the Program Organizers.

*Submit the following items online at the MathJobs site, between August 15, 2023 and October 1, 2023:*
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Publication List
  • Statement of Purpose, including a description of your mentoring experience
  • Reference Letter(s)--at most two: These should be short. The writer(s) should include a paragraph describing how your participation would enhance the program. The two most important aspects are your research and your ability to mentor postdocs. The letters should be uploaded on MathJobs by the reference writers.

To receive full consideration, it is important that all application materials be in place at the MathJobs website by October 1, 2023.

Important Note on Visa Status: If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident, please make sure to check visa instructions before proceeding with your application. Please note that severe restrictions apply to H1-B visa holders. For any immigration questions, please contact SLMath's International Advisor at int-advisor@msri.org

Important Note: The Complementary Program has a limited number of memberships that are open to mathematicians who are partners of invited members of a core program. Interested partners should apply for the position of Research Members in the Complementary Program through MathJobs www.mathjobs.org/jobs/MSRI.

Research Professorship offers will be announced by the end of November 2023. Applicants who are not offered a Research Professor appointment are automatically considered for Research Membership at the Scientific Advisory Committee Meeting in January. SLMath asks applicants' consideration in not phoning or emailing the Institute regarding the status of their applications before March 2023.

Mid career female applicants may wish to consider applying for the Joan and Joseph Birman Fellowship for Women Scholars.
